Sisu Defence Oy, a Finnish manufacturer of military vehicles, will present a new family of mine-protected, all-wheel drive SISU off-road trucks. The range will include SISU 10x10, SISU 8x8, SISU 6x6 and SISU 4x4 off-road trucks.
The lightest version in the product family is the brand new SISU 4x4 off-road truck, which is mine and ballistically protected.
The vehicle is a basic two-axle off-road truck intended for transporting personnel and materials and for towing equipment both on and off road.
The vehicle has been designed to address the needs of fast action troops and mechanized task forces, and of fast action troops intended for international tasks.
The vehicle has a 7-litre 275 hp diesel engine based on Caterpillar’s ACERT technology, through which the Euro4 emission requirements can be met without the use of additives.
The most robust version in the Sisu Defence range is the 5-axle SISU 10x10 off-road truck that was first presented to an international audience at the Eurosatory 2006 Exhibition, which was arranged in Paris in June.
SISU 10x10 is a robust bridge launching vehicle with a mine-protected chassis structure and two-seat armoured, low-profile cabin in the frame structure.
The engine is Caterpillar C15 with 55 hp and torque 2508 Nm. The vehicle carries an automatic 7-speed gearbox. Axles 1, 2 and 5 are steered.
The vehicle is equipped with an unfolding 26-metre MLC70 LEGUAN bridge, with a load bearing capacity of 70 tons for armoured vehicles and 100 tons for wheeled vehicles. The bridge structure is delivered and mounted by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann GmbH & Co (KMW) from Germany.
The Finnish Defence Forces has ordered a total of nine SISU 10x10 bridge vehicles. The vehicle is the result of a joint project with KMW and Patria, and deliveries are scheduled for 2007-2009.
In December 2005, Sisu Defence signed an agreement on the delivery of four-axle SISU 8x8 off-road trucks to the Lithuanian Defence Forces during 2007-2009.
The vehicles will carry the same type of armoured, low-profile cabin and mine-protected chassis structure as the bridge vehicle.
They will be equipped with a body-integrated hook lift that enables platforms and containers to be loaded fast even in field conditions. Some of the vehicles will also carry a robust winch unit and towing equipment.
The SISU 8x8 off-road truck has been designed especially to address the needs of fast action troops and peacekeeping operations. The total height of the vehicle is less than 2.7 metres so it can also be transported by air. When loaded, the vehicle is less than 4 metres high, which means that it can pass under bridges of normal clearance.
The vehicle has a powerful Caterpillar C12 engine so it can also operate in field conditions with a full payload.
Sisu Defence uses Caterpillar’s engines in its off-road trucks. Caterpillar is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of diesel engines.
The reliability of the vehicles under all weather and road conditions is improved by Caterpillar’s ACERT technology, which features advanced engine flow technology, optimised combustion, effective fuel after treatment and two-stage supercharging. With the ACERT system, the Euro 4 and Euro 5 emission levels can be reached without the use of additives.
Sisu Auto uses the ISO 9001 and AQAP 2110 quality system in its production. Sisu Auto also holds the quality certification no. 44 of the Finnish Defence Forces.
